President Trump this week spoke about the shooting of House Majority Whip Steve Scalise and three others in Virginia on Wednesday, referring to his comments earlier in the week after the shooting in Florida.
“I don’t think the FBI is too much into the Russian thing, if you want to know the truth,” Trump said. “To be honest, they seem to be into gun control, which I like. I like that. I’ll tell you what — they’ve taken off the terror, but the gun stuff is ridiculous.”
The president’s comments came just hours after the FBI took the unusual step of warning individuals about the New York Times and Washington Post for publishing stories that it said contained classified information.
The two publications were warned after they published articles on an intercepted telephone call during which members of the Trump campaign discussed how they could use information they gained from a Russian intelligence operative, according to a letter obtained by the Associated Press.
The FBI on Thursday said it has warned the New York Times and Washington Post not to print material that contains classified information.
“While the FBI, as part of our daily activities, routinely notifies publications about publications that we have received concerning potentially classified information, we wish to emphasize that our intent is not to censor,” the letter states. “Our purpose is to provide notice of the receipt of this information so that any necessary action may be taken.”
The FBI’s letter on Thursday came after the Times reported that a secret source provided information about a phone call between Michael T. Flynn and a Russian diplomat during the presidential transition and after Trump had been sworn in as president. The FBI was investigating Flynn at the time of the call. Flynn was forced to resign in February amid revelations that he had discussed sanctions with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak during the transition.
The Times also reported that Trump asked Flynn to contact Russia and other foreign governments during the transition about sanctions that had been imposed on Russia over its annexation of Crimea and its interference in Ukraine. Flynn later denied asking for sanctions relief for Russia, and the White House has maintained ac619d1d87
